1. What is Code42 cloud backup service?
- The cloud backup service enables you to automatically and securely back up your computer and/or laptop to the cloud. Once you install the cloud backup client, Code42, your documents will be backed up regularly.
- Code42 offers a complete hard drive clone to ensure all files are backed up.
- Other programs like Backup and Sync from Google just backup your files. This is generally adequate and you don't need to pay for a license.
2. Who can use a cloud backup service?
- Code42 is available to all Georgetown faculty and staff members that have purchased a license from UIS.
- Check with your UIS Account Manager if you would like a license.
3. Why should I use a cloud backup service?
- The cloud backup service is an easy way to automatically backup your files.
- As long as the client is running and you are on the Internet, any changes to your files get backed up.
- It is important to use cloud storage in the event of loss, theft, or failure of your computer.
4. How do I add my computer to Code42?
- To add your computer, just install the cloud backup service client.
- You can have up to 5 devices on one license.
- Once you install the client, and login with your NetID and Password, your computer will be added to the cloud backup service, and backups will begin automatically.

5. How much storage space do I have available to back up my computer(s)?
- You'll have unlimited storage space for all your backups.
6. How secure is Code42? Are my documents safe?
- Yes, your documents are very safe. Your documents are encrypted both when they're backed up and when they're restored.
- Encrypted while at rest on the servers and while being transferred.
7. How do backups work on the cloud backup service?
- When you first install and set up, the cloud backup service, the Code42 backup client will perform a full backup of your documents, and will then perform regular incremental backups.
- Note: It is very important that you give full disk access to Code42 (CrashPlan) on macOS to backup files on your computer.

8. I have a computer in my office and a laptop computer I use at home. Can I add both more than one computer to the Code42 cloud backup service?
- Yes, you can add up to 5 computers using your NetID.
9. Can I restore my documents?
- Yes, you can restore all or selected documents.




10. Can I add department computers to the cloud backup service?
- Yes, you can add any departmental computer to which you have access to the cloud backup service. See question 4 above to install the client.
11. Can I back up documents on my mobile device?
- Yes, the backup service is available for mobile devices.
- Download from your phones app store.
12. If I leave Georgetown, will I have access to my backed up documents?
- Once you leave Georgetown, you will no longer have access to your documents.
13. How can I find specific backed up documents that I want to restore?
- To find any documents, you can either navigate through your document structure from the Restore tab, or you can perform a search on those documents. See question 9 above.
14. Can I see all my documents that were backed up on all my registered computers?
- Yes. From the cloud backup client, just click on the Restore tab, and then select the computer from the Restore files from this computer drop-down whose backed up documents you want to view. You'll see a list of all the documents backed up for this computer.
15. If I shut down my computer, will my files still be backed up?
- The cloud backup service will be unable to backup your documents while your computer is shut down. However, as soon as you turn your computer back on, the cloud backup service will resume its regularly scheduled backups. (Any documents not backed up while your computer was shut down will be backed up as soon as you turn on your computer again.)
16. Does the cloud backup service client, Code42, need to be open for backups to be performed?
- The client doesn't need to be open, but you generally will want to see the icon in the Windows Task Bar or in the Apple menu bar. For the cloud backup service to perform backups the service needs to be running. However, backups won't be performed when your computer is shut down.
- In the image below you can see the first icon is Code42 Crashplan. Right next to it is Backup and Sync from Google.

17. Will the backup service slow down my computer’s performance?
- The cloud backup service shouldn't significantly slow down your computer's performance.
18. Will I have access to my backups if I leave the university?
- Once you leave the university, you will no longer be able to access your backed up documents.
19. I already use Time Machine on my Mac computer. Can I use it in addition to the Code42 cloud backup service?
- Yes. In fact you can use any number of backup services at the same time to ensure redundancy.
