To update Windows 10 to Windows 11, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
Note: This process may take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours, depending on the number of outstanding updates, your internet connection, and the machine's condition.
If your PC is compatible and the upgrade is ready, you will see the option to upgrade.
- Before attempting to upgrade to Windows 11, back up your local data to Box and confirm that custom applications are compatible with Windows 11.
- Save all data and close open applications.
- After backing up your data, go to your computer's Windows Start screen.
- Confirm that you have at least 20 GB of free space available.
- From the Settings menu, Select > System > Storage.
- Note the amount of space free.
- Open the Start menu and select Settings.
- Click on Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update. If you have other Windows updates available, run those as well.
- If you do not see Windows Update at first, it should appear after you run any other required updates.
- You may be required to restart.
- Select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates
- Click the Check for updates button.
- If Windows 11 is available, you will see a message in the Windows Update window and an option to download and install it.
- Select Download and install, and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the upgrade.
If Windows Update doesn't display the option, please contact Help@georgetown.edu and provide your contact information, computer name, serial number, and model. A technician will then contact you.
